Bird Paintings by Judy Cotton and Michael DiGiorgio at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts with an opening reception from 5 to 7pm, July 27, 2017. The exhibition will be on view through August 16. The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts is located at 84 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT 06371
Curated by Lowery Stokes Sims, this exhibition features bird paintings by two Connecticut-based painters, Judy Cotton and Michael DiGiorgio. Click here to learn about the artists. Based on direct observation and memory, these compositions show the artists' shared appreciation of the beauty of the birds as well as their shared concern for the fate of these species as they are impacted by environmental changes and human activity. Illustrations created by both artists for field guides will also be on view as well as on-site and studio studies that illuminate their image-making process.
Guest curator Lowery Stokes Sims will give a lecture at 7 pm on July 27: On the Wing: A Brief Survey of Birds in Art. This lecture will place the work of Judy Cotton and Michael DiGiorgio within the context of bird representations in different cultures and through the ages. It will demonstrate how a focus on mythology and symbolism has reflected humanity’s abiding fascination with flight, as well as the more recent ecological concerns about the fate of the original flyers. Seating is limited with an admission fee of $15, and reservations are required.
This exhibition and lecture are made possible, in part, by a generous grant from the Robert F. Schumann Foundation.
